Explanation of basic cloud formation

Contrail_Type.jpgThe jet planes we see in the sky produce four different types of contrails (condensation trails). Either there is no visible contrail, a short-lived contrail, a persistent non-spreading contrail or a persistent spreading contrail, which is a long, very visible contrail that slowly changes into an artificial cloud formation.

This is why the FlightPollutionRadar app asks the app user to register the type of contrail they've observed in order to be able to analyse any systematic links.

It is possible for jet planes to produce persistent contrails naturally, but in order for this to happen, three atmospheric conditions must occur at the same time. They are as follows:

- Atmospheric temperature of min. -38 degrees Celcius / -36.4 degrees Fahrenheit

- Supersaturated air with a relative humidity of <60%

- No wind at an altitude of 8 km / 26,247 ft or higher

The increasing amount of nano particles in the atmosphere caused by jet plane exchaust pollution has decreased the needed humidity in the atmosphere for jet planes to create persistent contrails. In the old days with deep blue sky the atmosphere humidity had to be oversaturated (around 100%) for a jet plane to make a persistent contrail, because the atmospheric nano particle pollution was low. Now a days the atmosphere is not deep blue anymore, but often milky white (global dimming) caused by increasing amount of nano particles in the atmosphere produced by jet plane exchaust pollution. That means jet planes today can make persistent contrails, when the atmospheric humidity is around 60% or more. The scientific explanation as to how long, persistent contrails are created is centred around the large amount of nanoparticle emissions - also known as aerosols - coming from the jet engines. The aerosols - or cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) - are responsible for cloud formation. CERN - The European Organisation for Nuclear Research - refers to these aerosols as seeds. The seeds can either be physical in origin or biological pathogens, such as a bacteria or virus.


Therefore "NO SEEDS = NO CLOUDS" (See link to CERN CLOUD research below)


Air pollution reportOne of the reasons for the large amount of nanoparticle emissions from jet engines is the unregulated, poorly refined quality of jet fuel, which results in a high concentration of sulphur. The high concentration of sulphur is about 1000 ppm. In comparison, the sulphur content in diesel fuel is 10 ppm, ie. approx. 100 times lower than that in jet fuel. As a result, jet engines emit more than 1000 times more nanoparticles per kg of fuel than modern diesel cars (Euro V). For more information download the report “Air pollution in airports”

Jet fuel also contains many different additives eg. Aluminum and barium, which also contribute to the total emission rate of heavy metal nanoparticles. The fuel additives contain trade secret substances and carcinogenic chemicals.  It as also clear that the Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for these fuels and additives almost always state the same things:

The environmental effect of increased nanoparticle pollution has raised concern among experts. No living have a biological barrier, that can protect us from nanoparticle pollution. Specially the aluminium found in water and air samples in non industrialized areas around the earth caused by jet plane nano particle pollution is linked to global increasing demens deceases as Alzheimers and Parkinson.

"Aluminum is a known neurotoxin affecting behaviour in animal models of aluminum intoxication. Bees, of course, rely heavily on cognitive function in their everyday behaviour and these data raise the intriguing spectre that aluminium-induced cognitive dysfunction may play a role in their population decline – are we looking at bees with Alzheimer’s disease?” said Professor Chris Exley, a leading authority on human exposure to aluminium, from Keele University.

As state above scientific reasearch now also state the increased amount of aluminium in the environment is the source for bees develop Alzheimers. This can be another explanation to supplement the agriculture neonicotinoides pesticides  damaging effects on bees to cause the global Honeybee Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Nanoparticle pollution caused by jet planes in the atmosphere is what creates artificial cirrus clouds, which according to meterologists around the world is contributing to global warming.

Certain scientists claim that nanoparticle pollution caused by jet planes in the atmosphere is depleting the ozone layer, which is thereby damaging all life on Earth. See the BBC article "Climate "fix" could deplete ozone"

Very cold temperatures (-40 to -60 degrees Celsius), the humidity of the atmosphere and the steam created by the combustion engines (a jet engine produces roughly one cubic metre of steam for every litre of fuel that is burned) enable the CNN (cloud seeds) to produce small ice crystals.

When a large amount of ice crystals are situated closely together in the sky, they appear in the form of a cloud or a persistent contrail coming from a jet plane.

The conclusion is therefore simple. Over 30 million civil flights, plus millions of military/air force departures each year produce huge amounts of flight pollution in the form of nanoparticles/aerosols, which in turn form artificial clouds.

The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) recognises that flight pollution has an impact on the environment, as seen in: "IPCC Special Report - Aviation and the Global Atmosphere - Summary for Policymakers – 1999":

  • "2. How Do Aircraft Affect Climate and Ozone? Aircraft emit gases and particles directly into the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, where they have an impact on atmospheric composition. These gases and particles ... trigger the formation of condensation trails (contrails)..."
  • "4.6 Cirrus Clouds. Extensive cirrus clouds have been observed to develop after the formation of persistent contrails. Increases in cirrus cloud cover (beyond those identified as line-shaped contrails) are found to be positively correlated with aircraft emissions..."


An increasing number of environmental scientists now conclude that artificial cloud formation is created by nanoparticles and heavy metals, which is the basis for weather modification, also known as geoengineering. The result of geoengineering is devastating for life on Earth and has resulted in an increased blockage of the sun's rays. The amount of natural sunlight hitting the surface of the Earth has decreased by 22 % since the 1950s, which has resulted in reduced photosynthese and solar power. This is what is known as global dimming of the atmosphere.

An increasing number of environmental scientists believe that artificial clouds formed by nanoparticle pollution are a vital key to the ongoing weather modification, along with electromagnetic radiation in the atmosphere generated by ionospheric heaters (EMF transmitters known as HAARP), which are situated in about 20 different locations around the world. This ongoing weather modification can alter natural weather patterns, increase the severity of storms and hurricanes and cause flooding and droughts across large areas of the planet. 

This is why FlightPollutionRadar was created - to provide people with the means of registering ongoing flight pollution and weather modification in order to help increase public awareness of these important issues and to help save the environment, which has been heavily impacted by both civilian and military flight pollution.


CERN Research

CERN.gifCERN - the European Organisation for Nuclear Research - has been conducting a lot of research into different mechanisms of cloud formation. On their website, CERN states the following:

"Cosmic rays are charged particles that bombard the Earth's atmosphere from outer space. Studies suggest they may influence cloud cover either through the formation of new aerosols (tiny particles suspended in the air that can grow to form seeds for cloud droplets) or by directly affecting clouds themselves."

Diligent flight pollution observers will have observed that on some days, there are no contrails at all in the sky, but still plenty of jet planes. There may be many natural and unnatural reasons for these observations, as well as a lot of speculation, but always keep the following in mind:

Jet engines ALWAYS emit large amounts of nanoparticle emissions, which in turn, function as a CCN = seeds for cloud formation.

The use of these patents and/or changing composition of jet fuel could be a possible explanation as to why some days the sky is covered with persistent contrails from jet planes, while other days there are none.

Facts about flight pollution and weather modification

What is flight pollution?

Flight pollution is caused by jet engines emitting water vapour, gases and millions of very small particles (also called aerosols), which function as cloud condensation nuclei (CNN), that in turn form clouds. It is observable in the form of as a persistent contrail (long trail) coming from a jet plane. Contrails form naturally at high altitudes (30,000+ feet) when the hot, humid air from a jet's exhaust is momentarily crystallised when it comes into contact with cold air.


Contrails composed of water vapor routinely dissipate, but if contrails transform into artificial cirrus clouds, then the jet engine exhaust most likely consists of water vapour plus billions of very small nanoparticles, also called aerosols. We see this as a persistent contrail (long trail) coming from jet planes or military tanker aircraft. This is the definition of flight pollution.


Why is flight pollution a problem?

Like petrol and diesel-powered cars and lorries, jet engines emit water vapour, gases and billions of very small nanoparticles known as aerosols. Every year, there are roughly 30 - 40 million flight departures around the world. All of these flights emit trillions of nanoparticles, both at sea level and in the atmosphere. The adverse health effects of nanoparticles in terms of traffic on the ground are already well known, and the more research that is done, the more reasons there are to be concerned regarding the health of the general public and the environment.

Results from a study carried out at Copenhagen Airport show that the size of the ultrafine exhaust particles and nanoparticles varies from 6-40 nm. These particles have a high deposition rate in the most sensitive area of the lungs, namely the alveoli. These particles are usually emitted directly from aircraft and diesel engines, and constitute about 90% of the total number of particles. The study also revealed that the air pollution at the airport is so severe, that baggage handlers end up inhaling roughly 240 billion nanoparticles every day they work. Depletion of the ozone layer:

The ozone layer is a belt of naturally occurring ozone gas in the atmosphere situated 9.3 to 18.6 miles/15 to 30 kilometres above the Earth and serves as a shield from the harmful ultraviolet B radiation emitted by the sun. Chemicals such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), which are found in aerosol deodorants etc. (banned in 1987) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFC), which have been used in refrigerators in industrialised nations for the past 50 years, are the primary culprits in the breakdown of the ozone layer today.

Scientists claim that the combination of CFC and HFC gases and the greatly increased particle surface area in the atmosphere caused by nanoparticle pollution by jet plane pollution provide additional surfaces for chlorinated gases, such as CFC and HFC gases, to react with and increase the deterioration of the ozone layer.

When, for example, CFC gases reach the upper atmosphere, they are exposed to ultraviolet rays, which causes them to break down into elements, one of which is chlorine. Chlorine reacts with the oxygen atoms in the ozone layer and rips apart the ozone molecule. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency states that one atom of chlorine can destroy more than 100,000 ozone molecules.

Chemicals such as old CFC and HFC gases, chlorine, bromine and sulphur (which is emitted from jet planes) combined with increased nanoparticle pollution in the atmosphere increase the depletion of the ozone layer according, which poses a threat to all life on Earth. Toxicological properties of nanoparticles:

Several studies on the toxicological properties of nanoparticles have been carried out. Although the various toxicological aspects and the diversity of the nanomaterials assessed are just beginning, many deleterious effects have been documented, particularly in animals. Insoluble or low solubility nanoparticles are the greatest cause for concern. Several studies show that some of them can pass through the various protective barriers of living organisms. The inhaled nanoparticles can end up in the bloodstream after passing through all the respiratory or gastrointestinal protective mechanisms. They are then distributed in the various organs and accumulate at specific sites. They can travel along the olfactory nerves and penetrate directly into the brain, just as they can pass through cell barriers. (Source: IRSST - Health effects of nanoparticles)

Inhalation of Nanoparticles:

Most critical with regard to potential health risks are nanoparticles dispersed in air (aerosols). This is because of their mobility and the possible intake into the human body via the lung – the most critical exposure route for humans. Particle size largely determines in which specific functional regions of the respiratory tract the particles will be deposited. For practical purposes the respiratory tract can be divided into three anatomic and functional regions: (1) the upper airways and (2) the tracheobronchial region, which are both well protected by a mucous layer. Here, larger particles will be filtered out of the inhaled air by deposition on the airway wall. Cilia movements transport the mucus upwards to the throat, so that it can be expectorated or swallowed. Smaller particles (less than 2.5 micrometers (μm)) and nanoparticles may enter (3) the alveoli, which is the gas-exchange region of the lung. In order to facilitate the absorption of oxygen and the release of CO2, all membranes and cells in this part of the lung are extremely thin and vulnerable and lacking any protective layer. The only clearance mechanism in this part is provided by macrophages, large cells that can "swallow" foreign matter and remove them from the alveoli by "carrying" them, for example, to the lymph nodes. However, it seems that nanoparticles largely escape the alveolar macrophage surveillance and gain access to the pulmonary tissue. Persistent inhaled particles and fibers can interact with the pulmonary epithelial cells, leading to excessive inflammation, scarring and destruction of lung tissue as examplified by bacterial pneumonia or industrial lung diseases such as silicosis and asbestosis, the two most common and often lethal occupational diseases of the lung. What is Global Dimming?

Global Dimming is the gradual reduction in the amount of global direct irradiance at the Earth's surface that was observed for several decades after the start of systematic measurements in the 1950s. According to Israeli and German scientists, the amont of direct sunlight hitting the Earth has been reduced by 22% since the 1950s. Why do some airplanes have long persistent contrails, while others flying on the same day have none?

There are several explanations for this:

Possible explanation 1:

The two jet planes are flying at different altitudes.

Possible explanation 2:

The two jet planes are flying at the same altitude, but using different qualities of jet fuel. Normal jet fuel contains a high concentration of sulphur - about 1000 ppm. In comparison, the sulphur content in diesel fuel is 10 ppm, ie. approx. 100 times lower than that in jet fuel.

Aircraft engines emit more than 1000 times more nanoparticles (in numbers) per kg of fuel than modern diesel cars (Euro V). The nanoparticle emissions from jet engines function as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), also known as "cloud seeds", which in turn, create ice crystals in the atmosphere. A cloud is made up of large clusters of ice crystals.

Possible explanation 3:

The two jet planes are flying at the same altitude, but one of the jet planes is a civilian flight using normal jet fuel, while the other is an unmarked military tanker aircraft carrying out geoengineering on the atmosphere. What does the term "chemtrails" mean?

When a jet engine is spewing out hot, humid air into an atmosphere that is cold and has low vapour pressure, the result is condensation. The water vapour coming out of the engine quickly condenses into water droplets and then crystallizes into ice. The ice crystals are the clouds that form behind the engine. This is why the streaks are called condensation trails. 

The term "Chemtrail" is a combination of the words "chemical" and "trail," just as "contrail" is short for "condensation trail".

Chemtrailing is the public term for the CLASSIFIED ONGOING artificial modification of the Earth's climate systems using reflective nanomaterials (aerosols) to reflect sunlight. The aerosols are dispersed via jet aircraft trails that expand into reflective artificial clouds.

The reflective nanomaterial aerosols function as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), also known as "cloud seeds", which in turn create ice crystals in the atmosphere. A cloud consists of large clusters of ice crystals in groups. This is why long persistent contrails coming from jet planes observed in the sky often develop into artificial cirrus cloud cover at medium to high altitudes.


What does the term "geoengineering" mean?

From an article in the Encyclopedia of Global Change, published by Oxford University Press in February 2000:

"Geoengineering is the intentional large-scale manipulation of the global environment. The term has usually been applied to proposals to manipulate the climate with the primary intention of reducing undesired climatic change caused by human influences. These geoengineering schemes seek to mitigate the effect of fossil-fuel combustion on the climate without abating fossil fuel use; for example, by placing shields in space to reduce the sunlight incident on the Earth."

Another term for geoengineering is Solar Radiation Management (SRM) or Stratopheric Sulfate Aerosols Geoengineering (SAG-SRM).

SRM: "Solar Radiation Management (SRM) techniques, which reflect a small percentage of the sun's light and heat back into space. These methods act quickly, and so may represent the only way to lower global temperatures quickly in the event of a climate crisis. However, they only reduce some, but not all, effects of climate change, while possibly creating other problems. They also do not affect CO2 levels and therefore fail to address the wider effects of rising CO2, including ocean acidification." (Source: Royal Society homepage)

SAG-SRM: The ability of stratospheric sulfate aerosols to create a global dimming effect (white haze effect in the atmosphere) has made them a possible candidate for use in geoengineering projects to limit the effect and impact of climate change due to rising levels of greenhouse gases. Delivery of precursor sulfide gases such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S) or sulfur dioxide (SO2) by artillery, aircraft and balloons has been proposed.


Are civilian planes and military aircraft using different kinds of jet fuel?

From Wikipedia "The most commonly used fuels for commercial aviation are Jet A and Jet A-1, which are produced to a standardized international specification. The only other jet fuel commonly used in civilian turbine-engine powered aviation is Jet B, which is used for its enhanced cold-weather performance. Military organisations around the world use a different classification system of JP (for "Jet Propellant") numbers. Some are almost identical to their civilian counterparts and differ only by the amounts of a few additives; Jet A-1 is similar to JP-8 , Jet B is similar to JP-4 . Other military fuels are highly specialised products and are developed for very specific applications."
